A weekend retreat for cancer survivors, organized by a non-profit organization for survivors of reproductive cancers, was attended by the author, who has follicular lymphoma, a form of blood cancer. The organizer, who was met while doing advocacy work for a university health center, invited the author to the retreat, which was open to any woman who has cancer or has had it in the past.

The timing of the retreat was particularly fortuitous, as it took place the weekend before the author’s next CT scan, which aimed to determine if their cancer had returned. For 48 hours, the author was surrounded by people who understood the anxiety and uncertainty of waiting for scan results and discussing them with a doctor.

Shared Experiences and Understanding

Being with people who have gone through similar experiences can be incredibly freeing and relaxing, as there’s no need to explain the emotional toll of waiting for test results or the stress of potential outcomes. The author found comfort in the understanding and compassion of fellow participants, who didn’t require explanations for their feelings or actions.

After the weekend, the author received messages from other participants, expressing their support and hopes for positive results. The term “positive results” can be misleading, as it actually refers to negative test results, indicating no signs of cancer. This nuance is often lost on those who haven’t experienced significant health problems.

The author also appreciated not having to explain their behavior, such as compulsively drinking water after the CT scan, as it’s a common practice recommended by scan technicians to help clear contrast dye from the system.

Gratitude and Support

The experience of spending the weekend with other women who have gone through similar struggles was invaluable, and the author is grateful for the support and camaraderie. However, they wish they had never qualified for the experience, as it’s a reminder of the challenges and uncertainties of living with cancer.

Despite this, the author is thankful to know that such support systems exist and are available to those who need them. The retreat provided a sense of community and understanding that can be hard to find elsewhere, and the author feels fortunate to have been a part of it.

Cancer Support and Resources

According to the report, the non-profit organization that hosted the retreat aims to support survivors of reproductive cancers, but also opens its events to women with other types of cancer.

The author’s experience highlights the importance of such organizations and the impact they can have on individuals affected by cancer. As the author looks to their upcoming CT scan results, they can take comfort in knowing they are not alone and that there are others who understand what they are going through.

It is a comfort.
