Hospitalist Secures 13th APEX Award

The June 2025 issue of The Hospitalist earned an APEX Award of Excellence, marking the publication’s fourth straight win and its 13th overall since launch in 1997.

The APEX Awards for Publication Excellence evaluate entries on graphic design, editorial content and overall communication quality. About 1,000 submissions were reviewed, yielding 100 Grand Awards and roughly 400 Awards of Excellence across 13 major categories and 100 subcategories.

For the June 2025 issue, the award was granted in the “Magazines—Writing (entire issue)” subcategory. The issue was one of ten magazines honored with an Award of Excellence for that category.

Content Highlights of the Winning Issue

The honored issue featured a range of articles aimed at hospital medicine professionals. Topics included healthcare considerations for LGBTQIA+ patients, the challenges faced by teaching residents, and practical guidance on negotiating contracts for hospitalists.

Other pieces addressed legal and operational concerns such as ICE visitation policies, strategies for managing medical errors, and emerging trends that impact day‑to‑day practice in hospitals.

According to Dr. Eric E. Howell, CEO of SHM, the award reflects the magazine’s “longstanding role as a trusted source of information for hospital medicine professionals handling an increasingly complex healthcare setting.” He added that both the publication and the society remain focused on advancing the field and equipping members with the insights needed for high‑quality care.

Physician editor Weijen Chang, MD, FAAP, SFHM, highlighted the collaborative effort behind the issue. “This fourth consecutive APEX award is a sign to the steady excellence and teamwork of the Wiley and SHM editors and editorial board members,” he said, noting that member contributions were essential to the magazine’s success.

The APEX program’s emphasis on graphic design means that visual elements such as layout, typography, and imagery were scrutinized alongside the written material. The June 2025 issue’s clean, reader‑friendly format and use of infographics to distill complex data contributed to its distinction among peer publications.

Beyond aesthetics, the evaluation of editorial content rewards pieces that combine rigor with accessibility. Articles that translate emerging research into actionable bedside recommendations exemplify the standard set by The Hospitalist, reinforcing its reputation as a conduit between academic advances and everyday clinical practice.
