D-ribose supplements may improve marathon performance and recovery

D-ribose may aid marathon performance and recovery, according to Bioenergy Life Science, which cites two clinical trials in China indicating the nutrient supports endurance and post-exercise recovery in amateur runners.
Studies focus on heart health and speed
Beijing Sport University conducted the research, which included a randomized, double-blind study on 40 male marathoners aged 45 to 65. The subjects took low, medium, or high doses of D-ribose for eight weeks before a half-marathon simulation. The supplemented groups showed reduced biomarkers for cardiac and muscle stress, and their three-minute post-exercise heart rate recovery matched their pre-intervention baselines.
At the highest dose, runners finished the simulation faster. The medium dose also cut average heart rates during the exercise and shortened completion times. A second study looked at younger runners, using a single dose or a split dose before and during the race. The split dose improved three-minute post-exercise heart rate recovery by 9.4% in males and 6.5% in females. Completion times dropped by 5% for men and 6% for women with the single dose, and by 5.4% for men with the split dose.
These findings align with the ingredient’s established role in restoring cellular ATP, which powers muscles and heart tissue. Decades of research confirm that D-ribose helps refill ATP stores after intense exertion, a mechanism that becomes especially relevant for older athletes whose natural recovery processes slow down. This creates a distinct advantage in maintaining consistent cardiac output during prolonged efforts, where energy depletion can otherwise lead to premature fatigue.
Second Study Design and Broader Applications
The second study employed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial with 10 male and 10 female young amateur marathon runners to evaluate D-ribose’s impact on cardiac function and sports performance. BLS general manager Michael Crabtree highlighted that the findings confirm the ingredient’s benefits for athletes of all ages, emphasizing the continued expansion of research building on decades of established use.
Ingredient has decades of history
The company notes the ingredient has been on the market for more than 30 years and is backed by user experience and research. It has evolved from a niche bodybuilding supplement to a mainstream ingredient in sports, endurance, and cardiovascular health markets.
BLS markets its Bioenergy Ribose as the only D-ribose that is generally recognized as safe in the US and authorized as a Novel Food by the European Food Safety Authority. The product is also Non-GMO Project Verified and BRC Certified.
